short throw shifter
B&M Racing makes a short throw shifter for late model porsches but not for my '81 911SC.
Anyone know where I can find one? |

Many prefer the factory-designed Porsche short shift kit. I'm sure Pelican carries it.
Here you go: http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/911M/POR_911M_pedals_pg1.htm#item1 See this as well? http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_short_shift_tindel/911_short_shift_kit_install.htm

Some time ago I put a short shift from Tweeks in my 72, which has a different shifter than later 911s. I love it but my wife needs two hands to operate the shifter.
Sounds about like the Weltmiester kit and for about the same money. Just my $.02 Dave @ Dart |

I have the factory short shift in my 81sc. Not much of a difference in amount of force used to shift. I'd go with the factory...

Another thing to consider would be to replace all four of the bushings in the linkage, and install with with a good, fresh supply of synthetic moly grease, such as the new Valvoline SynPower Synthetic Grease with moly on the ball cup and shift rod bushings ...
And then just disassemble, clean, and shim any play in the internals of your 915 shifter ... and reassemble with plenty of the moly grease on all of the pivot points inside the shifter ... and try that for a while! The 915 shifter was assembled at the factory with a sparse amount of plain, white lithium grease. While adequate when the car was brand new ... I am quite sure after 21+ years, it is not up to the task any longer! I am also sure that there is some wear and play that could be compensated for during an R&R job, as I have done it personally on a couple of occasions. You might be amazed at the difference, afterwards!

Too big to fail

I put the factory short shift kit in mine, along with new front bushings. This made a *huge* difference in the shifting. The rear bushing was replaced a couple of years ago when I had the transmission rebuilt.

Here are three pics of an SC shifter that was parted out, and just arrived today from an eBay purchase ... appears to have never been out before being pulled.
Notice the 'smears' of white lithium grease on the areas never subjected to wear or contact, and, of course, the blackened 'used' grease on the 'working' areas that rub ... Just a little visual evidence that the 915 shifter DOES NEED a bit of occasional preventive maintenance from time to time!

Warren, again you have inspired a "weekend project". Renew ballcup and lube the shifter. Life is good.
