My wife just bought a 1974 Special Edition 914 or so we think. Does anyone know how we can tell if this is a real special edition or not. It has swaybars front and rear, center console, leather wrapped steering wheel, and the two tone paint. The wheels are missing but a mahle spare was in the trunk. The bumbers are painted black instead of yellow. Is there somewhere I can go to find the vin numbers of the cars that were produced? Thanks for the help.

Would the paint code rivetted to the front drivers' door post be the place to check?

Paint code
The paint code onthe door is L 04 I. Which is for black and that is the base color. Is there a special code for the special edition cars?

I believe that the paint code was usually (always??) the trim color. On a black LE car, that would be yellow, probably L13M.
You can also write PCNA and get a "certificate of authenticity" which will definitively state if it's an LE car or not. For details, see: http://www.dgi.net/914/tech/authenticity.html The LE cars were taken from the general pool of bodies available at the time--they tend to have serial number that fall into a range, but not everything in that range is an LE. --DD
