What year car? I had a similar problem with my '86 and found that the problem was a short at the 3rd brake light; the insulation was cracked and the 2 wires were touching...simple fix AFTER I had taken the brake light assembly apart for no good reason other than to kill an afternoon...major PITA. Check the fuse first to see if that is blown. If not, it may be the brake light switch(es) (on the master cylinder, I think.

I don't know mutch about the Euro wired cars.
However, on our '86 factory manual fuse #4, 8A (green/blue wire), is the feed for our brake light switch. From the switch, a black/yellow wire goes to both stoplight filaments in our rear tailights. ![]() Using a multimeter: Check both sides of the appropriate fuse on your fuse panel. If not blown, try cleaning the fuse contact/replace the fuse. On an old car, fuses & contacts have a tendency to deteriorate. Next check the ground (brown wire) to grounding point on the inside (right side) of the engine compartement. This circuit is very basic. nothing more than a switch. If nothing has been modified or tampered with: My bet. The brake light switch. Good luck, Gerry

Apparently brake light switches are a weak point ... tendency to arc out ..... I will post a link in a bit .... Gotta go find it.
Brake Light Switch, Again? Do a search on posts by DRACO A5OG .... brake switches are his topic specialty. I ended up getting rear-ended in an 87 Targa due to failed BLS. ![]() Rear-ended on Dragon practice run (w/Pics) Last edited by Shadetree930; 08-30-2009 at 01:10 PM.. |

Very common problem. It happened to me three weeks ago.
I replaced my brake switches and added an arc supressor. Total cost was around $55 and should last forever. Install took less than an hour. Read this: Brake Lights and this: No brake lights Get the arc supressor here (no affiliation, just a happy customer) or search "BLSAS" for more info: http://forums.rennlist.com/marketplace/showproduct.php/product/13/date/1240673640
