86 carrera brake lights
Hi guys,
I have noticed that although my brake lights work, they only work when I really jamb the brakes from speed. If I am just driving around and brake normally, they don't come on, if I wait to the last minute and for example slow from 80km to 0 by jambing the brakes, they come on. Needless to say I am going to get pulkled over either way, one for now brake lights driving normal, or two, for driving like an idiot and braking like a madman at the last minute. Any thoughts on what could cause this Thanks |

This is a commom issue with Carreras. The brake light switch(s) are located on the brake master cylinder and they get old and "slow". Besides the brake lights these switches also disengage the cruise control. So if you use the CC you have to apply excessive brake pressure to slow/disengage, that can be annoying and dangerous. You might find yourself exiting a highway and brushing the brakes to slow down and turn off the CC and sudddenly you are deep into an exit ramp and the CC is still on! Ask me how I know...
You have two options...Replace the switches or replace the entire master cylinder. If you replace the entire M/C you might run into a common issue with the connectors not fitting the new switches. See this thread for one of many easy solutions. Brake light switch connector spacing problem. A search will find other options. Good luck...

Contact DRACO A5OG for the BLS relay in Shadetree's link. It'll prevent you from having to replace them again. Also, when you do replace them, make sure you prefill the BLS' with brake fluid before putting them in. This will ensure there are no air bubbles in BLS (ask me how I know).

Yup, switches are beginning to fail.
Very common problem. It happened to me three weeks ago. I replaced my brake switches and added an arc suppressor. Total cost was around $55 and should last forever. Install took less than an hour. Read this: Brake Lights and this: No brake lights Get the arc suppressor here (no affiliation, just a happy customer) or search "BLSAS" for more info: http://forums.rennlist.com/marketplace/showproduct.php/product/13/date/1240673640

Sorry about that. I think they're fixed now.

Does anyone know what page this is on in the Bentley manual, I looked forever and can't even find a reference to these switches. Thanks

470-8,9 shows the procedure for removing/replacing the master cylinder. The switches are referenced there (470-9). There really isn't a specific section for replacing the switches. The "No Brake Lights" link above pretty well covers the proceedure.
