RS vs SC flares

Someone on the board had a post containing a picture of and SC flare vs a RS flare. I know they are very close, but does someone know where the picture/post is? I tried the search engine, no luck. Also tried searching threads somewhat randomly for an hour or so. If you know where the thread is, please let me know. Thanks

Very subtle difference...I doubt I could tell. Now I wonder what flares are on my '73?

The big clues to me seem to be how the front end of the flare opening is nearly vertical on the SC and at more of an angle on the RS. With the lower cut at the top it appears that the RS flare is squashed. I wondered why the flares on my early car looked different when compared to an SC or Carrera, I hadn't seen this comparison before.

But yes without them side by side it's hard to tell.

I'm not sure there is any difference in the overall shape of the arch. t The width of the flat part of the arch is th main difference as has been detailed many times before. I think some time with a body hammer and a dolly could raise the flat enough to fool anyone but Dave. (Oh, I know there are more, like soterick and fryards, to name a couple. )

I think you'd have to take off those SC rockers to really tell. Perhaps they give the illusion in those photos of a vertical front edge.

It's simple...

As was said, the arch and the swell of the fender is the same on both.... It's the return or lip that is different......

The SC 'lip' is about 5/8 inch from edge to contour all the way around the opening consistently...

The RS 'lip' starts at about 5/8 inch but then enlarges and flattens to about 1 inch at top of the arch... then gradually come back to about 5/8 as the arch ends...

Hope this helps...

that can't be right, if only for the fact that the panel below the fender on the rear of the SC is taller than the bumper on the RS - so the tracing is out of scale on the RS photo. Better to end the line at the seam at the bottom of the body and disregard the bumper/underpanel.

Yes, I see your point. OK, I referenced the shape to the wheel cap. Assuming the wheels in both photos are the same size and approximately the same position (could be error here), this is what you get:

Looks like an RS flare to me. It's not a constant thickness on the flat section. What is the VIN on that 74? If it is earlier than 9114400073 it is more than likely a factory-installed RS flare too. If the vin is later than 73 it could still be a factory-installed RS flare too. I have tried to figure out if there is a clear transition in the VINs and that about where I have figure it to be. Early 74 carreras used bits left over flares and ducktails from the 73s.

See what I mean . But looking back I think Chuck Millers criteria is a good one which I think is -If the lip is constant width (looking at it straight on from like shown in my pic ) it's an SC if it varies it's an RS - ish.

After a second look I agree with Druepy. The lip is different, but so is the profile.

Then once in a while something like this comes up. 78 SC that looks like it has RS flares....kind of https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1978-porsche-911sc-27/

And for comparison 1975, clearly shows SC style
