Question Porsche 911 Radio antenna amp

have a 1986 Porsche 911 with a bad radi antenna booster amp. Any experience as to what needs to be removed and replaced to install a replacement. Local dealer is no help. have heard that it is under dash behind glovebox, but this is not for sure. thanks.

I"ve heard the same, my reception sucks as well. YOu can get a generic aftermarket one on the internet, they run about $15-30.

Yep, antenna amp is located in the front trunk behind the glovebox. If you have a bad unit, you can find a used OEM one for cheap, or find a (better) aftermarket one for fairly cheap as well.
I would make sure that yours is actually connected before doing a swap. Who knows what the PO had done. Plus, if it's ever been to a car audio shop, they can/do forget to reconnect the amp lead back to 12v (little black wire that is typically wrapped around the head unit antenna cable).

I have a '72 911T with the original Blaupunt radio. The reception has always been terrible, especially when the car is moving. I've replaced the speaker & antenna (whew!) without effect. Did this model car also have the antenna amp? Could this be my problem?

I am pretty sure the external antenna amp/booster only came on the 1985+ cars that had the built-in windshield antennas. If I had to guess, I'd say the majority of your reception problems stem from the fact that you still have the original Blaupunkt radio! I'm thinking AM/FM tuners have come a long way since 1972.
FWIW, an aftermarket antenna amp shouldn't be too hard to find or install. I just don't know if that would help with an old "wandering" tuner.

Does anyone have any specific info on aftermarket antenna amps? I couldn't find one through our host.

Check with Crutchfield.com, or your local electronics shops (Radio Shack, etc.).

For those interested,I have solved my initial problem. the issue was a bas antenna booster amp. I tried an aftermarket amp ($30), but it worked only on FM. I then ordered a Porsche part ($150), which did work. When I received the new part, I knew what to look for. it's a black box (mayve 2x1,5x.75 inches) mounted on the right hand side of the car accessable from under the hood. You get access just to the left of the right hand hinge. It's fairly far back. the amp is mounted on a stud, held on by a nut (11 mm socket). the lead from the windshield drops down from above the mounting point. the connector is not the standard male antenna connector at that point, so only the Porsche part (made by Fuba) may fit correctly. The regular antenna lead then threads down and through the firewall to under the dash. if you try to trace the lead up from the radio, it seems to go to the cehter of the car. Not sure why, but i would not have located the amp without seeing the Porsche part so I knew what to look for. You can see the amp from under the hood with a light.

I upgraded my radio to a Beckeer CDR 220 from SW Stereo. also added a CD changer and Blaupunkt speakers and a small, self=powered woofer that works very well. Woofer i got also from SW Stereo. Stefan Weiss ofSW was absolutely outstanding to deal with . I could call him at any time, when working on the car, for help. Can't say enough to complement him. Recommend him with our reservaton.

Stereo now working very well. My wife noted the quality. So a story ends well. Hope this additional info helps others with similar problems with Porsche (in glass) antennas. thanks for the help from those who responded..

I'm shopping for a booster. Does anyone know of a spec in case I find something at a high end antenna mfg's? I'd be able to then compare something besides price.

the stock one is ok.. just wondering if there was better around.
It's not the greatest when away from the cities.

thx

I was hoping a new windshield with a properly connected antenna to the antenna amplifier would make a difference...and it did! Check out the end of this thread for the latest window install on my 87 911 Targa.

Which Windshield 993 or stock 89??
