r&r oil cooler
I own a 1975 914 with the 1.8L engine. I have read the article about replacing the oil cooler seals with the engine in the car.
Is there also room to get the oil cooler out? I think it might need to be replaced as well. |

Not really. You can slide it forward just enough to let the old seals fall out. With some persuasion, if necessary. You need some special tools (read: a long screwdriver and some grease) to get the new seals up into that thin gap...
Outacontrol, you might be able to unscrew the three oil cooler studs from underneath--maybe--which would let you drop the cooler. But I sure as heck wouldn't even want to try!! I'm pretty sure that it would be faster and easier to drop the motor and do it the "old fashioned way". --DD

In answer to you question, the cooler won't come all the way out with removing the front sheetmetal, and directional shroud. You can back the bolts all the way off though.
I don't need to tell you this requires an engine drop right? You may be able to take all this stuff off with the engine in the car, but you're gonna have a rough day. General rule of thumb is, oil cooler seals only, in the car with beer and patience. Oil cooler also, engine pull, a buddy or two, and even more beer.
