Hillclimbing Sicilian Style - Taste of the Targa Florio

Happiness is a beautiful, sunny day in Sicily, standing on a hillside surrounded by enthusiatic fellow gearheads, drinking wine and eating panninis, watching and listening to the sound of flat-sixes, webered fours and other machinery as they wail past. Just got back from my place in the hilltown of Caccamo, Sicily, which is a mountain range west of the old Targa Florio route, and caught one stage of the International Historic Challenge http://www.mediterranearacepromoter.it/ . It is a multistage hillclimb event held in the fall from the coast to various hilltowns in a kind of reenactment of the Targa. Most guys come from Sicily, but also from other parts of italy. And they can drive. Was great to get a taste of what the Targa must have been like.

Yeah, one of those guys was me! (behind retaining wall tho). The experience was addictive. Hope to get my SC over there next year and participate at some point.

About the exhaust, the guy had done a custom job, with header leading into a center muffler. Sounded really sweet, as you can see from the vide.

The great thing about Sicily is that the roads haven't changed much. Pure driving and biking nirvana... without cops! Was riding around last week and almost hit a herd of sheep... must have been nutz during the Targa.
