Now THAT was an adventure

Renting a car: $200
Driving your Porsche: Free
Looks from cowboys in Colorado: Priceless

I knew I was in trouble when it starting blizzarding in St. George, Utah. Miles to go: 550

Dunlop Sport 9000s SUCK in the snow and ice. Porsche 4 wheel drive is worthless, too.

My kid rocks on

After 2 days of 30mph behind semis and pickups, finally made it to the folks house in Colorado.

Lessons learned:
Fly next time
Now I know why all you East Coast types store your car during the winter
Porsches are for driving!
Would do it again in a heartbeat

That's pretty damn cool, Richard.

AWD and 3.6 power in that snow would have been great fun!

Hillarious, it looks like some new kind of snow plough.

I'm just pleased you didn't crash the car, LOL.

Richard,

When I bought my Dunlop Sport 9000's, the guys at the tire store made me promise I would not drive them in the snow. Since I store the car in the winter, that's not a problem. The Dunlops are great on wet or dry pavement, but they are not recommended for snow at all... I'm glad you made the trip safely! You and your son will have fond memories of the trip!

Cowboys in Colorado....... are you nuts! Most of the folks in Colorado these days are from California, looking for some great driving roads for their 2 and 4 wheel friends

There's nothing like driving in the Rockies (when it is not snowing). Sure is better than stop and go on the 5, 57, 22 405, etc

Glad you made it safe.....we are expecting 2-3 ft in the mountains by tomorrow.

Yeah, high performance (wide) street tires are real frightening in snow, it wouldn't matter if you had 8-wheel drive.

Put some Blizzaks(sp?) on that thing and it would be time to go racing, baby!

Glad to hear from you, Richard, Happy New Year!

8 wheel drive? That's just what my 2 engine car design needs! Brilliant!

A cab in the snow? That's nuts...although if you'd put the top down during the snow storm you would have gotten quite a bit of attention on the road...

Looks like a great & memorable ride!

There was a Pirelli idea for an inclement-weather solution back in the '70s that probably inspired Goodyear engineers a bit ...

Pirelli came up with a removeable insert that fit over the dismount depression on an 8" wide or so conventional wheel ... made a flat surface from bead. Then they mounted two tires side-by-side that looked a lot like motorcycle intermediate tires. Result ... eight tires on four wheels with a big water/snow dispersion channel in the middle, and plenty of tread blocks all the way around to the sidewall for lateral grip in the snow.

Now, where did the idea for that Goodyear tire with the central water dispersion channel come from???

That looks and sounds absolutely effin awesome!!

Do you have more pics??

When I was a kid, my Dad and I made many snow trips in his 1967 MB 250S Sedan. It was a Euro version that a guy brought back from Germany. No A/C, no power anything, 6cyl 4 speed on the floor. Went great in the snow with sensible driving but could get loose quick.

We laugh about those trips quite often.

Now that, to all of my garage dwelling friends, is what you call a driver! Great story, you'll never forget it. I-70 through the mountains in a beautiful drive, during a blizzard, I don't know about that.

Warren, didn't the Brits use that type of setup back in the 30's for hill climb cars? I'm sure the method was different, but the result was the same, two tires for added traction per rear corner.

Cleaned the car today... now I'm really kicking myself for driving it to Colorado. The paint on the front bumper is absolutely hammered... good thing I have a new bumper cover with RS splitters at the paint shop now. The worst part though, is the rocker areas, which were completely blasted through the paint down to the metal. My formerly pristine car is now in need of paint I'll post pics later today or tomorrow.... I hope this thread will be a reminder to others not to drive your nice car on the snowy highways... not good. Think I'll drown my sorrows with a good wine and a hot tub tonight

Your all-wheel-drive is just fine. But totally useless with those tires. Get a set of Blizzaks and you'll feel like WRC ace Tommi Makinnen himself - you'll seek out the snowiest roads around!!! BTW, there were several highly amusing threads on some of the Cayenne BBS's after the first few snowfalls of the year. One guy crashed into his parking garage door and claimed his brakes suddenly went out ..... others getting stuck in 2 inches of snow while Toyota Corollas zipped around them without problems ...... of course, these all had dry-weather performance tires ....... Sorry to hear about the paint though!
