Question Big Red Upgrade

Guys,
What are your thoughts on upgrading an '78 SC with brembo big reds? What are the pros and cons?
Thanks,

make sure you have 17 inch wheels. also, and not sure if this year of 911 have the larger power assist brake booster, but that'd be nice also

good luck

Do you need that much brake? There are effective alternatives for less money...

Do you have 17" wheels (like mjshira points out)?

Are you able to lock up your stock brakes? If so you have all the brakes you need.

The biggest downside I see is increased expense. The setup is expensive. You'll need to ditch the fuchs and the pads are also not cheap. The upside is they feel great. I've been tooling around with my brothers car over the last week and they feel even better then my 930 setup. He has the larger master cylinder also. The brakes bite high up in the pedal and only need to travel an inch to full lock up. Great pedal feel and modulation for trail braking and heel toeing. I can't wait to feel them on the track. These are on an 87.

Actually, for occasional emergency stops thats fine. If your tracking the car and experiencing brake fade, brake fluid boiling, pedal softness, and increased pad wear, switching to bigger brakes can solve alot of problems. I routinely had issues with my stock carrera brakes until I switched to a 930 setup.

not to hijack the thread. How about your era turbo brakes? No extra wheels needed and cheaper?

The 930 set up was what I wanted. I invested too much time and love into my fuchs to get rid of them and there is no other system out there that works with a 16 rim. They are more then enough for what I need.

They are overkill for an unmodified SC. That said, they are unbelievebly good! They are really not much more expensive than a full 930 setup. You do need 17s(I have been told that there are some custom 3 piece 16s that work but have never seen it myself), For almost any decent upgrade you will need a 23mm 930 m/c anyway. A plus is the rotors are very reasonable though the pads are not. They are heavier, but I have not found that to be detrimental in practice.

This is what a true Big Red f/r setup looks like

They will have 322mm rotors f/r

I may be wrong but I do not believe that the setup posted by Mike (89911) is a true Big Red. It looks more like a 993 f/r calipers.

Mike, please correct me if I am wrong, but that front rotor is odd and the rear is definitely a 993/965 or 964

Bill, is there any advantage to using the 23mm master cylinder on a carrera with stock brakes?

Jeff

930 brakes work with 15 inch wheels as well.

No, none, Don't do it.

Unfortunately there is little choice of R rubber in 15" sizes. Even in 17 there is a poor selection. Everyone is concentrating on 18 these days

Bill, this is VCI's version of a Big Red upgrade for 89 and earlier cars to retain the rear emergency brakes. It is identical to the set up on a 1994 C2 turbo.

Here is VCI's information:

I don't think it has ever been driven. Notice the shock isn't bolted on...

Your looking at new shocks, new brakes, new SSI's, new CV axles, cleaned trailing arms, cleaned Fikse FM5's. He does keep his car clean though.

Just a note here,.......

Brembo has 2 new brake systems called GTP Brakes.

One of them is called GTP-L and fits inside 16" Fuchs (944 offset for the front) wheels. These use 322x32 full floating front (4lbs lighter than TT) and 322x28 bolted rear rotors.

The other is the GTP Brake for 17"-18" wheels. These have the same rotor sizes as above, but with with larger calipers and pads.

Both kits require 23mm MC's and its included in our kits. You can have red, black or silver calipers.

Specs are at http://www.rennsportsystems.com/1-sf.html and I'll post pics when I get a chance.
