More aluminum fabrication fun!! =D

Hey everyone

Heres the latest aluminum fab sillyness from the last few days:

Oil scavenge pump mounting bracket:

With pump on the car.

Charge pipe from intercooler to intake (drivers side) with wiggins clamps:

Intercooler cooling air distribution system:

Tubing to get air from engine cooling fan.

Clean Y to split the air.

Duct that fits over intercooler face.

All mounted on the car.

The passenger side equivalents are mostly finished. Just need to get the pieces welded together.
Also got a buncha fitting and a setrab cooling core but those arent worth posting pictures of.

Thats great work and all, but I am skeptical that those little ducts will supply enough air for the intercoolers.

Even a stock 930 sucks almost half of all its cooling air through its intercooler.

Where did you get your wiggins clamps and tubing by the way?

Princeton,
Continually nice fab (as in fabulous) work. Congratulations.

Can I contribute some thoughts from the peanut gallery?

Are those filters the extent of the air intakes? I fear you will ingest more than air at that location. You need but one pebble in the intake tract to lunch the compressor wheel(s). May I suggest using some Scat hose on the turbo inlets and introduce air somewhat further up away from road debris? For example, if the back seat is unoccupied, you can purchase or fabricate (I know you can do that quite well) a filter box fed by NACA ducts mounted to the rear quarter windows, or some variation of that.

This car's owner went through a couple of lunched compressor wheels with a filter box behind the LR wheel (aluminum housing shown). He solved the rapidly thinning wallet syndrome by installing NACA ducts in the rear quarter windows; one with continuous hose to the now-sealed air box and turbo (I couldn't talk him into putting the filter elsewhere). The other hose fed ambient air to the engine. With your fabrication skills, perhaps a rigid pipe from the engine compartment to the turbo inlet ensures the integrity of the intake path near the road.

Also, it's a little difficult to gauge the amount of ground clearance to the scavenge pump. I assume you have that covered.

Keep us up to date with the progress.

Sherwood

thrown_hammer,

Do you use Chromium wrenches on that Monkey. I remember hearing years ago that such wrenches weaken titanium. But don't hold me to it!

barlowdo,

It is cadmium-plated wrenches you don't want to use on Titanium ... that knowledge was obtained by the Lockheed Skunk Works guys during the development of the Blackbird!!!

Early_S_Man,

Yes, that is exactly what I remember. I also recall they needed these massive huge presses to form the Titaniun on the SR.

I have wondered ever since how Titanium is being shaped now a days.
