Seeking opinions on this '90 964..
Soliciting opinions, after doing extensive research on early 964 issues...
The details; - 90K miles - 3rd owner - Rare Linen color, original paint, great condition except couple imperfections as follows - Minimal front road rash - Panels straight, gaps good - New pads/drilled rotors - Later 964 larger rear calipers - Strut brace - 4k on BFG KD's - 17" Turbo twist (I know, not everyones fav, but I like’em) - New Bilsteins/H&R springs - Lowered and corner balanced by TRE - Autothority (?) chip (orig avail) - R134 upgrade - Carrera cup muffler (orig avail) - Cat bypass (cat avail) - Factory tool kit, jack, inflator, manual - Recent rblt dizzy (yes it has the vent kit) - Full leather - New red top optima - Fogs replaced with ducts - Front splitter - Bentley, Tech Specs - Valentine 1 - Decent audio - Test driven by Scott in N LA, says handled and ran "like a dream" The not so good details; - docs only for last owner of 3 yrs (10k), engine sound shield removed at this point - oil drips, apparently several drops per week, none on the heat exchangers, source unknown, but appears to be case seam. - very shallow 2” depression above RH rocker (fixable by “dentless”) - dime sized ding behind LR wheel (kinda fixable) - barely noticeable 2" scuff on LF fender (not fixable) - needs new rocker weather stripping - 2 small areas of leather wear thru surface, at seat control, and driver side door (fixable) - carpet not that clean (it is light gray after all) - R corner of rear bumper resprayed, tone just slightly off - large (1/2"?) chip (sort of repaired) on rear bumper - clutch and DMF unknown - 3 of 4 wheels have minor curb rash So far, price is $18.4 Let me know what you think. TRE will be doing the PPI this Friday. pic's on the way...

Oh yeah, forgot to mention it has a clean Carfax with an interesting mileage history;
2K per year for first 10 years, first owner 20k per year (!) for next 3 years, next owner 3 k per year with current owner of 3 years This means mostly freeway miles, which should be kind to the valve guides...

Al - the only thing I would not like is the interior color. If TRE checks it out for you and some of the issues that arise can be dealt with by price negotiation, you may be in good shape.
I love my C2, but like any Porsche, check it carefully, price out those things you know you will want to address (rash, dings, leather wear). If the Seller can work with you at that point you may be the new owner. Good luck -

Looks nice, but unlike 69-912 the exterior color would be a turn off for me. If you like it that's what counts, but I will tell you that I once bought a car with a color I didn't like but that was a solid car, but due to the compromise on the color I was never happy with it. There is a big difference between a color not being your first choice and being one you don't like. When I bought my current 911 years ago my choices (in order) were red, silver, black. White and yellow were no-go's, and I found a great white one and almost talked myself into it but I'm glad I didn't, as I plan to keep the car for a long time.

Nice, but the color would be a deal breaker for me. Resale would also be an issue.
Do you like black? I know of one locally that might be available...same year but with a carbon deck lid and tail. Edit: Al, you've seen the black car I'm talking about...it belongs to RSlater.

The bg "if" to me would be the oil drip at the case seam -
It's not just a normal "top end" it's a new P & C, case machined, etc - so a full engine rebuild = but also a damn fine excuse to go to 3.8

I like it Al. Color is unique, concern is the same as JeremyD's oil drip at case seam...but if the PPI checks out, and your happy with the results, go for it.

Thanks for your comments everyone!
Color preference is obviously a personal thing, and I happen to like this one I think the 911 is the only car on the planet that looks good in ANY color!I was kinda hoping for feedback on the price though.... Well, I'll post the PPI results later this week. Orig posted by Drago; Quote:
Lot's of maint to keep it looking good. I agree with you about odd colors affecting resale, and thanks for the tip on RSlater's black 964.

Intersesting color. Don't like the 993 towel bar. Some 92 mirrors would freshin it up a bit. Price seems right. PPI always recomended.

If the remedy to the oil leak is a "re-seal" you are looking at $6k to $10-12-14K??? (depends what else you want to upgrade while the motor is apart
) So, unless the owner realizes this I would stay away unless you can get it for about $8K.. not $18K. There are plenty of other 964's for sale. Recent history is better than no history.

Not the most popular color and used car market is dead. I'll bet you're the only hope the seller has at this point so you probably have leverage on this deal.
Since it's not stated the car is 2WD right? Oh and I'm sure you've heard that Porsche reserved it's best workers and motors for the black cars. They were easily 15 mph faster than the other colors ![]() I'm just jealous cause I'm not in the market for a 911 right now... |

If you really want this car, tell the seller if he corrects the oil leaks, that you'll consider his asking price. He probably won't agree to that because if the heads are leaking it's ~$10K to fix.
Proceed very cautiously and make a decision based on a good PPI not lust. ![]() I like the color! Last edited by TerryH; 01-03-2007 at 02:41 PM.. |

The price is neither good nor bad - but given the potential issue(s) I think you probably have some wiggle room

Wow! What a car... I really like the inside and out! Different is what makes it so nice!
The not-so-good details are cosmetic and the price reflects that is not a show room condition car. After 17 years there are some things that wear.. ![]() About the oil in the seam... could be the RMS (rear main seal) that is about $25. The problem is that the engine need to be dropped and transmission.. If I was in your place I'd talk to the seller and let him know that without knowing the true source of the leak then "no-deal" cause you don't want to buy a car with problems... I mean you're spending enough already. See if he can share the expense of the PPI incl./ dropping of the engine, that way its a piece of mine for you. This is what I did when I bought my 964 and it was perfect. I don't think its leaking from the heads... remember the oil leaks are deceiving because th oil runs to the lowest point of the engine and that is always the crankcase seam. If I was you I'd buy it. Someone who has looked after the car so well during the years wouldn't let it run without maintenance. Good luck! ps. mine is GP. white with linen interior and there were only 40 built like that.. but yours probably is ever more rare... you may have a pretty unique specimen in your hands...

This was where my leaks were on my 1990 C2 Targa
Pretty sure the porsche definition for needing to be fixed is "wet to the touch" hope that helps with your negot...
