Way too vague a question.
Year range of car? Price range? Coupe, targa or Cab? Paper or plastic?

I had a 73 Targa 10 years ago, nice car. Maybe something a bit newer.
Targa will do, coupe might be a nice change. |

I'll sell you my 83sc cabriolet for 10K. it's got high miles but it drives well with tons of records. I've had it since 2000. It's the european model with 200+ hp. A/C delete. Guards red over black/new top. PM me.

I think in the 10K range you should look for a decent 1978 - 1983 911SC. I can tell you to look for a car with receipts to show its history, have a good pre purchase inspection done by a porsche shop, check every nook cranny and crevace for any signs of rust. If you encounter rust, leave. Rust is expensive to repair and always worse, much worse, than it first appears. With the SC's make sure that you check the condition of the headstuds. Broken headstuds are very very expensive to repair. If it were me I would try and find an SC in good mechanical condition that needed some TLC in the cosmetic area. 10K is lower middle class in the price range of SC's, so you probably wont find a perfect SC for 10K, but you can find a 10K car that is fun to drive and work on as you go.
Where are you located? Maybe some local pelicans can help. It would be really good to have someone show you around the car so that you are familiar with how things "should' look. Rich

What to look for in a 911? Hmmmm. A 25 year old beauty queen...she's look pretty cute in a 911, I'd imagine.

You have an advantage I didn't when I bought my first 911 twenty three years ago; namely the internet. Granted this is not your first 911, but you still may be able to expand your general knowledge before dropping any significant coin.
There is a buyer's guide right here on this site. I'd recommend reading through it. Likewise there are many other sites with information. Rather than answer your question with a particular model, I'd say read everything you can about the cars. Be educated going in then pick the one that meets your needs and driving styles. http://www.pelicanparts.com/911/technical_specs/911_guthrie_faq.htm This Edmunds article is a good starting point as well. http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Features/articleId=100434

Are the 1984-1989 Carreras as bulletproof as the SCs? Does $20K get you an outstanding Coupe that you won't have to spend much money on? Is this a typical example?
