I'm new, but I have a Alternator issue question

Good Evening. Today, I bought a 2003 Golf TDI in Jacksonville FL. I found it on ebay. Nice guy, one owner. 207900 miles. He claims that all maintenance has been done. I drove it away and began my trip home to Ft Lauderdale FL area. About 300 miles. At about the 190 mile mark, I stopped at a rest stop. When I started the car, the battery light came on. I turned it off and then on again. The battery light came on. I started driving. My theory was that if it was a bad battery, the alternator would get me home. If it was the alternator, the headlights would dim as the uncharged battery continued to drain. I might need a tow. Sure enough, as I hit the 250 mile mark, the lights were dim, the dashboard lights dimmed, and the ABS, Anti Skid, and Airbag lights came on. I knew that I should pull over and call for a tow. Fortunately, a tow truck pulled up behind me before I got out of the car. After a successful tow to my house, the driver put a boost box on the battery and I tried to start it. Just wanted to drive it into my driveway. It would not start. We pushed it in.

So, after this long story, being that I am brand new with this car, is it a simple alternator replacement and a battery charge, or could it be something more? Thanks in advance.
