September is a good time to go. If you don't want to go alone, I'd join you for a few days. You can get there via ferry from Port Angeles, Anacortes, Horseshoe bay and Tsawwassen.
A side trip to not be missed is: Lund, BC to Hopkins Landing, BC......Lund is the very North ending of the old Pan American Highway (route includes several short, free ferry rides).
