Everyone has an opinion and so do I.

My family and I have visited Vancouver island a few times. 3 times by car, twice by private boat.

The tragic thing is that the entire island has been logged, there is no old growth left. Economy is resource based and it was easy money, now you talk to locals they don’t know what old growth is. I didn’t see any old forest in a car/hiking accessible place. even in the crown parks, for that visit Olympic Park in Washington (the hoh), or rainier Park, both of those parks are truly stupendous. Makes me feel bad for bc, they don’t know what theyve lost.

Frankly I don’t think it’s worth a visit by car, not much to see from the roads. Lots of driving, the place is huge. Be careful of logging trucks if you’re exploring, carry a radio that can receive and transmit the logging channels.

The area nearby I liked the best with car and mtb was around Powell River on the mainland, take the ferries south along Sunshine Coast to Vancouver. Pretty touristy as you descend south though, but the north is cool. great mtb trails there.

The real thing to see is the west coast of the island by boat, but those are serious seas, and if you’re doing that then maybe buck up and visit the charlottes?
