My 1985 CJ-7 was only a few years old at the time, but was still a complete handfull on the highway (especially in wind), the tires found every crack in the roads and followed them. We changed out the meaty 31x12.5x15 Goodyear Wrangler mud tires for much more sensible 30x10x15 all terrain tires and improved slightly (not nearly enough).
Sensory overload on the highway with a soft top, not as bad with a hardtop, and undoable with no top for any length of time.
