Depends on several things, including how much of a cost the diesel option is. They make it quite a bit more expensive on the HD PU trucks, mostly to cover the cost of the whole Diesel engine program and partly because they can, I guess.
We’ve had these discussions before regarding 3/4 and 1-ton trucks, people making the claim about diesel trucks not penciling out always leave out depreciation which is usually the single biggest cost of owning a truck, (if bought new). The difference in depreciation becomes even more pronounced on higher mileage vehicles, check eBay for used Ford F-250s w 6.7 diesels sometime. Check 3 y.o. trucks w 100k miles. They make Toyota Tacomas look like depreciating junkers.
If the diesel trucks got exactly the same fuel mileage as the gasoline version, they’d still be cheaper to own because of the huge difference in depreciation. And of course, they get up to 50% better mileage while towing and have massive torque. This calculation does not account for the larger initial outlay or cost of $$, etc. But you get the point.
