I just dump in the first 5 liter container and then add 1/2 of the next container and then bring up the level slowly.
(It's about 8 liters for a 400SE)

Once it's on the dip stick it doesn't take much to get it to the top level.

And yes if you over fill it it's worth sucking out the extra oil to bring it down to the correct level.
