There is such a WIDE variety of single malt scotches you really need to get more information. First....does it even like scotch? If so, then does he prefer the "peaty" scotches or the other, smoother kind. Here is some perspective:
Very peaty scotches such as those made on the coast or an island like Islay (Laphroaig is an Islay scotch) are peaty. No offense to fans of peaty scotch, but it tastes like burning tires mixed with turpentine. Respectfully, I have not yet developed a taste for the peaty scotches.
Highland scotches are WAY different. Very smooth. Two days ago I picked up a bottle of
Aberlour and it's tasty but otherwise unremarkable.
Under $50. Aged twice, the second time in used sherry casks. Macallans is one of my favorites. Mind, you, these are not very expensive scotches.
Age is beauty, with scotches (and men
). So.....find out (if you can) whether he like the peaty scotches, and then get him the oldest bottle you can afford.
