In 9th grade I think it was, was in Alabama. They had a crazy system. You HAD to have a token to get lunch. They sold the tokens during home room and they were 25 cents each. My parents gave me a quarter I know. BUT, the guy selling the tokens came to our class room as his last stop. He would let me look in his change box and pick out any silver coins. They were still in common circulation back then. I would pay face value for silver dimes and quarters, and the nickles. Yep during WW2 nickel was scarce so they made the nickles out of silver. I also bought 5 cent pieces and and on occasion a silver dollar. Any steel pennies and old pennies I bought. I had to mow my butt off to make enough to buy the coins. I had to miss a lot of lunches because I bought coins.
They are sitting in the safe, still just getting older like me.
