Originality takes more work and is risky, with true genius often not recognized in it's time. Going with the familiar can get you past that first stage of the lowest common denominator result of group think.
Honestly some of the things going on in China (
and Asia in general) blows my mind, a different culture and way of thinking combined with untold wealth. I'm not saying western architects aren't designing some of this stuff, just saying the culture seems to be receptive to innovation more so than a culture that has apex and is in decline looking to the past glory days.
