Do you have the tools to diy or just trying to get an idea so you can tell your friend to take it to a shop and not get ripped off?
If you want to diy, you need to have the proper tools, set of manifold gauges, a digital meter or a test light at the minimum and a complete understanding of how an hvac system on this car works.
You need to hook up the gauge and tell us what the readings are.
Perform voltage check on various points in the control circuit.
Then somebody here can walk you through the troubleshooting.
