Revolvers have the advantage of being chambered in significantly more powerful rounds. The .41 mag, .44 mag, .45 Colt (with heavy handloads), .454 Casull, .480 Ruger, etc. are far more powerful than the typical autoloader chamberings of 9mm, .40 S&W, or .45 ACP. Granted, there are autoloaders like the Desert Eagle that are chambered in rounds that equal the big bore revolvers, but the revolvers are far more compact and easy to carry.
As far as how quickly one can fire a revolver vs. autoloader, the double action revolver wins hands down. Sounds counter-intuitive, I know, but once one reaches a certain level of proficiency, you will actually find yourself waiting impatiently for the auto to cycle. That said, we are looking for aimed fire - you can't miss fast enough to stop an attack.
