I went outside this morning and I am real sure I could hear my grass growing. I set the sprinkler to run last night to water in the fertilizer so everything was wet and happy.
The Koi pond had male toads calling for a week. A few days ago the singing stopped. That is usually the sign he found love, or some floozy toadette to breed with. We now have tadpoles so it was a successful union. We have tadpoles every year. They help eat some of the alga on the rocks on the bottom of the pond. Then the fish eat the tadpoles, or most of them. Survival of the fittest or luckiest seems to have a few survive to be little baby toads and get bigger than the fish can eat.
The parent toads are still around for a while, enjoying the water and the bugs. The dogs will harass them for a while but eventually they get a snoot full of toad venom. A few frothy mouths and they remember to leave them alone. I think our male dachshund is addicted to the toad venom.
My dad was an addiction counselor for several years after he retired from the Air Force. He even went to OU and got a degree in it. Anyway he said one popular thing with some idiot kids was to catch a toad, hold it over hot water and then lick its back to get high. I guess Toad Suck Arkansas (a real place) was named appropriately.
