I think the six-year old was the smart one here.
She probably began to realize that the next words from Leaky to Mrs. and
fille Seals was going to be "Here's Johnny" and she wanted to have time to
give fair warning to her family!
(And, Leaky, we've all been there! There was once the incident where my GF at the time was begging the waitress to bring me a muffin because my blood sugar was
dangerously low!)
