It sounds like fun having your own car in Europe. Legally 6,000rpm in topgear.
However, if you have been put off, maybe consider buying a car over there. Not a 911 - too expensive, but a used Golf or something (Corolla perhaps). And sell it when you leave. Almost free "rental."
Renting six months from a company will bankrupt you.
