If you don't wanna go through the hassle of welding the center stand for more height, try placing the existing stand on a 1x6x18 block of wood (similar dimensions will also work). My airhead has a 'ride off center stand'. It also does not lift either wheel off of the ground. If I want to remove a wheel, I slip a block of wood under the stand.
My R1100S didn't come with a center stand, thus I've been stalking every BMW site, craigslist post and eBay trying to find one. Be good to yours, as I've discovered, used stands are rare.
