Yeah it was probably resold as parts at the local used bike shop. Didn't really take time to look.
I know when my hub caps went missing off my 71 Satellite I bought more at the city hob cap salvage and wondered if I was purchasing mine back.
The automatic 10speed didn't look as cool. Actually, looked like junk, but was functional. And because it looked cheap and like it had issues it never got messed with in the school bike racks. They were probably waiting for me to buy my old bike as parts from the bike shop.
During college my car ownership went from 3 to zero. So, the summer after graduation the first thing I got with my first paycheck was a nice 10speed commuter bike so could save for a car. Worked on night shift so set it up with lights and a rear luggage rack for the 8 mile ride to work. While the college bike was great for going back and forth to class, it severely lacked as a commuter bike. With the commuter bike could make it to work and back in the same amount of time as if i had a car.
Before the end of summer and the weather started getting rough picked up a 77 Cutlass Salon from a fellow co-worker. He sold it to me cheap because the carpet was shredded. Otherwise it looked and ran great. Bought a remnant and replaced the carpet myself, and even carpeted the trunk. Used a heat gun to make the carpet fit like it was that molded carpet stuff they put in cars. When I sold it I got what i was asking for when the guy opened the trunk and saw the nice molded in carpet matching the interior. He couldn't give me the money fast enough.
Ended up giving my old college 10 speed to brother Bob. He was living in an apartment and got his stolen. The spent a bunch of money fixing it, including replacing the derailurs because he didn't like the auto upshifting. After fixing it up, it got stolen as well.
