Koni Red adjustment, DIY fix?

I have a pair of 86-1638 Koni inserts that I bought years ago. They are stock unlike my existing inserts which were re-valved and shortened for track use. Now that the 911 is restored for Sunday excursions I would prefer a softer rebound. The stored Koni inserts both have the same problem, I can engage the adjuster on full compression easily enough but they just spin without reaching the usual full soft or firm stops. I can turn them clockwise and they do get firmer, counter clockwise and they get softer. My question is what's likely broken and can I easily disassemble and repair? It looks like I can pry back the crimps and I have a reasonable set of tools, any advice out there?
