Artists do all kinds of weird and erratic things- history is full of artists who just lost it one day. One thing seems to be apparent and that's he decided to do this at the drop of a hat.
I imagine, to operate on his level and with that much exposure has to be tough on your mind. You can never just, be. Obviously he was lonely as well- he talked about it routinely.
EDIT: Just like a trained seal or a circus bear- everyone poking and prodding you, daily. Your life isn't your own.
