I did not live in an air conditioned house until I was a Jr. in high school. I never attended an air conditioned school. The house we moved into when I was in 11th grade was a barracks style unit that was more like an apartment. It was a unit that housed 4 families, so there was a family sharing a wall on both ends of our house. The laundry room was at the end of the unit so we had to haul laundry outside for 75 yards.
The AC system had a padlock on it until the base decided it was time to turn it on. We had many HOT springs months.
I vividly remember promising myself that I will someday own a home with central AC and I will control the temp. That took me 10 years to save the money to make the down payment on a house and I woke up in my house on my 28th birthday. It was November, so the AC was not needed, but it was wonderful all summer long. Then I got married 10 years later and lost control of the thermostat set temp. It stays at 78 now.
