The 396 (425hp, and I think a 375hp ver) was also available in Impala SS in '65. It replaced the 409 in that car. (Both the 409 and the 396 were available in the Impala SS that year)
396s were available in 1970 as well, at least in El Camino SS, I believe/assume the Chevelle SS as well. I think at least some of them were factory bored and were actually 402s. (a buddy had a '70 El Camino with one in HS)

My first car was a '65 Impala. Nothing near as sexy as mentioned above, but I'd love to have a '65 Impala 2dr 396, 4spd, LSD, power disc brakes, power steering and AC as a toy.
