My Dad instilled in me that I may be able to do something, but if I could make more money doing something else than it cost to hire someone to do that something, pay them and do the something else. But if I didn't have something else to do, do ahead and do it, unless it would end up costing me more to do it myself than having someone else do it.

I worked on my cars myself until I got my 914. Most of the time it was cheaper to have the local mom and pop Porsche shop fix it. But there was still a few thing I did myself. Then I got a full size GMC Jimmy and did everything myself including swapping the 305 for a 400. Then I got tired of alway fixing things and got new cars with very few repairs. I traded off the cheaper vehicle for the freedom of fewer repairs.

That worked great until I moved to the house I am in now. I got the Porsche bug again. Got a 944TurboS. Tried to do the repairs myself until I discovered I lost the knack for fixing my cars. I was spending a lot more because I would break two to three things getting to the thing that needed repaired so. Started taking it to the shop. Have been taking my cars to a mechanic ever since.
