I started working on my cars for two simple reasons, maybe three.
Number on was I was a broke sucker and had to save every penny I could.
Number two, I only had one car. Almost every shop wants you to leave the car with them for more than an oil change. I would have to walk or rent a car to do that, so I just fixed it myself.
Three, I saw what some "professional" mechanics charged for repairs and the "repair" work done, and how they treated the car.
I can't count how many girlfriend's cars I fixed with simple issues. I did lots of disk brake pad replacements for chicks I was dating. It seemed to me for a while that all women needed brake pads. It was weird.
