I looked into this around 2006 when my E46 was rear ended to the tune of $7k worth of repairs, which included an entire new exhaust up to the manifold. I went to a guy who specialized in such stuff. He pulled a Carfax, which showed no accident history, even though these repairs were done by the local BMW dealer and paid for my the at-fault driver's State Farm. He said I should drop it and pray State Farm didn't come after me for appreciation due to getting an all new exhaust system on a 60k mile car.
