No, per your linked Ken Rockwell article it says:
"This was about a $3,500 camera in its day, corrected for inflation."
Corrected for inflation would have put it's price back then around $448.22 or so...
Still expensive in it's day.
Painting it. No way would I do that to a family heirloom. You are simply the custodian of that heirloom until you pass it on to someone else in the family. Have respect for what you inherited and the future custodian.
