I'm sure that most guns in a glove box just sit there unused.

You would lose such a bet, most firearms are used on family members on purpose or by accident, with suicide being the most frequent application. This includes firearms stored in glove boxes as the more than two examples I posted illustrate.

You sure do seem to be promoting that idea by posting this incident and proclaiming it as a "selfish desire to protect our family".
I own guns, I am not anti-gun, I am anti-stupid.
If someone actually has a "selfish desire to protect their family" then they will keep their firearm on their person or restrict access to children, and possibly lock them up unloaded when not in use.
