The root issue is that you get what you pay for, and that includes employees.
Retail sucks; trades can suck. Dependable employees get dumped on. No one seems to pay enough to keep the quality of employee around they desire. I can't tell you how many times I've seen a help wanted ad and thought: "if someone existed with all of those qualifications, they sure as hell wouldn't be working for you at that low pay".
I honestly think most stores like Advance would be better served by paying 7 competent employees well, maybe 3-4 working at any given time, instead of having 20 incompetent to barely competent employees.
I think wage pressure is building, which unfortunately will be followed by inflation.
Another problem is, what do we do with all of the incompetent people, as a society?
