Smoke is not a good thing. Check in the area you saw/smelled the smoke for burnt/fused wires and replace. Triple check your wiring to the switch is correct. Me thinks you transposed the wires.
I bet your new switch works so replace an existing switch with it and give it a try after you carefully document which color wires go where.
