@Geo - there're some very good replies to your original question, but I will tend to side with Lowndes.

I have ridden telelevers in one form or another for past 7 years and its not that I am biased, its that I feel that oil heads are just great solid bikes offering excellent value. I find r11s to be an extremely solid bike in terms of road holding. Its a porker at almost 500lbs with under 100 hp, but it carries its weight well and is quite stable in the twisties.

This was said before, but I would concentrate on 2 items in particular: suspension and tires.

Make sure your suspension is "dialed" in for the weight your bike will carry - you+pillion+cargo (if any).

Tires will transform this bike. I went from Metzlers to Michelin PR4 and it opened a whole new chapter of the r11s handling for me. I recently acquired another R11S BCR with Metzlers, while having sold my previous BCR with PR4 tires. I can tell you that I can feel the difference. PR4s with several thousand miles were a better tire that fresh Metzlers. If I decide to retain my current BCR, it will receive a set of PR4.

One mod that is not directly related to handling but definitely a performance upgrade is the AF-Xied. My former bike had it, current one does not. Again, a world of difference for few hundred dollars.

You can dump another $700 or so into lennie's intake and SJ BMW air filter for better breathing and $1k or so into new Laser exhaust. This will improve pass through but AF-Xied is where I would begin my mechanical mods. It will never be a sport bike, for that you would need to look at R12S. Incidentally, the prices on those are coming down into more realistic territory...
