When I'm fighting weird A/C issues I find that it's easier to simply vacuum down the system and recharge per the manufacturer spec. That way you know it has the exact correct charge and minimizes the variables associated with an older car. You can get a decent vacuum pump at Harbor Freight for $60 and R134a refrigerant is cheap.

Otherwise check the usual stuff - clean condenser, clean evaporator (several products to foam clean the heater box), check fan clutch, make sure the compressor clutch is staying engaged, check the sight glass for bubbles if equipped.
