They might be on the fringe of a good setting and bad weather affects it quickly.

I'm never there when it happens, and my 82 yr old mom (or dad) ain't gonna do that
. I was there when the tech set it up....he had a couple of choices (as I recall) as to which "birds" to point at, no obstructions at their house, etc. and as I recall...a strong "dialed in" signal. I thought of you yesterday btw....four more sliders relocated to the big lake
