Absolutely correct, we could signify our unending love with a seashell, a piece of fruit, or a dead rat... but somehow our culture has adopted the diamond ring.

Many people live happily ever after without getting married at all so a diamond is not absolutely necessary.

IMHO one of the basic needs of many women is a sense of security... and when a man agrees to put up with the whole dog and pony show of ring+dress+ceremony+honeymoon it shows that he is invested in the relationship and going to stay committed.
