You certainly can run the Conti radio with the old speakers, though I did replace them. The old ones really were done- paper cones evidently aren't designed to last 40 years. The rear speakers were incredibly shallow in order to fit under the package shelf; so narrow that the magnets and coils were inside/on top of the cone rather than behind it.

The first thing I did, though, was to fit a DIN radio plug to the car so those wires need never be molested again. If I want a new radio, it should be plug-and-play.
