I had a craftsman ratchet that started slipping soon after a trip to the Colorado river.
I opened the back and found that the grease had gotten so hot at the river that the oil separated from the binder and leaked out and what was left (wax) had hardened.
I cleaned it and put in new grease and it worked better than ever.
