I pay all my utilities and virtually all my bills electronically. Auto-Pay is a great thing. The day it is due, it gets paid and I have to do is delete the email. The credit union sends me an email that the bill is due, and 5 minutes later I get notified the bill has been paid. Two days later a paper copy of the bill shows up and says, DO NOT PAY THIS BILL. Somehow I still love seeing the electric bill show up and see that phrase, and just run it through the shredder. I got notified on my electric bill and city water-trash-sewer paper bill showed up today. The Natural gas bill still shows up on paper. The cable company only has it on-line. Same with AT&T.
I still vividly remember eating another meal of potato soup, rice with nothing but soy sauce, and mac and cheese to save the money to pay the utilities. When I bought my first house I was single, and I really should have waited another year. But I need a place to live, and I just did not like renting. I was spending less than five cents per day for food. Rice and taters are cheap.
On Friday night it was payday so I could really splurge and pour a can of soup on the rice, and enjoy a beer. Screw those "good ol' days" of the early 1980s when my mortgage was a GREAT rate and way below normal. Only 12.5% interest for a 30 year mortgage.
