I’m after some advice on headers and exhausts...
Seems like it’s been a bit of a hot topic in the past, but a lot of the threads I’ve searched have been older.
I’ve decided to drop the engine in my 914 into my ‘75 911 project.
The engine I think was put together by Henry Schmidt (though I may have the wrong Henry here - not much info from the prior owner) and it’s a ‘75 2.7 case made into a 2.8.
Claimed compression is 10.3:1 according to some older PCA race documents along with a claimed 92mm bore and 70.4mm stroke. The build seems to date back before 2010.
It’s currently running 46 IDA Weber’s and headers with a couple of cherry bombs on the end.
Paperwork claims it has an RSR clutch and flywheel and also has twin spark heads.
Being full of dreams (among other things) but little talent to back it up, a friend has offered himself up to help me out with the swap. I would like to get as much on hand before he helps. I also have the stock 2.7 to draw tinware and engine mounts etc from.
At the moment, the headers are roughly 1.62” OD (and judging by the superb engineering in the car this diameter is possibly optimal) I wondered what people would suggest for a reasonable system for when it’s put into the 911?
I like the idea of it being fairly quiet - doesn’t have to be stock quiet, but also I like the idea of two rear facing pipes (to make the noise go away from me / my passenger).
I would replicate what’s on it now, but for the 911, but to be honest, however good it sounds (which is absolutely amazing and not like most 911s that I hear locally), it does feel like the end of the world is coming! Way too loud for the street.
Also the clutch seems amazingly on or off. Fine for a race car, but not too good for a Sunday morning ‘blat’.
I would like to keep the cost in the realistic ball park,as I’m also having to shell out on oil lines, oil coolers - not to mention a ton of auxiliary things, just to get the engine in and running.
Thanks for any thoughts, experience or advice!
