removing 914-6 Heat exchangers

I'm mostly a 911 guy but I'm helping a friend remove the 914-6 exchangers and we ran into a decent sized snag. Half the studs have been threaded with plain hex nuts (13mm) and we can't get a socket through the HE to unbolt them. We can get to a few of them by going around but on 4 of them there's almost no access except through the access holes. Is this a typical thing with these HE's? I know on 911's half the studs use M8's (13mm nuts) are removed by going around the HE but it doesn't look like this is possible with the 914-6 HE's.

Also are all of these studs supposed to be put on with barrel nuts?

Thanks
