Mom grew up on a ranch in NM, part of what was originally the Chisolm ranch.
Her mom was the cook and bottle washer, her dad was a ranch hand. this was after he got back from the south pacific in WWII.
One of his jobs on the ranch was to shoot rabbits.
He'd stand on the back of a model A flatbed truck as it cruised through the desert and when he saw a rabbit spook he'd shoot it.
They'd go out once a week when weather permitted and grandma would make up enough rabbit stew to feed the entire crew for several days.

Grandpa had a single shot lever action 22LR he bought for $11 during the depression, worked and saved up for a long time to get it and he used it to put food on the table. I never found out what happened to his father but he was gone and my grandpa was the provider at an early age.
Needless to say he was a really good shot with that rifle.
He taught me to shoot and i 'member his saying "when you only have one shot, you learn to make it count".
